SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA CHAPTER

The San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of NANAY was conceived on March 2, 2000, when NANAY’s projects were presented to more than 250 delegates at the Filipino American Women’s Network that was held in San Francisco, through the able leadership of Mona Lisa Yuchengco from Filipinas Magazine. Present during the conference were  Eva and Evelyn Bruce, Virgie Buban, Mila Francisco, Linda Haraguchi, Margie Ortigas, and Marisa Robles,  who were joined by youth leaders Anne Marie Cruz and Sherille Pedron, who later committed themselves to following NANAY-Florida's footsteps in providing supportive services to the elders. NANAY-Florida officers Joy Bruce, Nida Recabo and Helen Kranzel gave the full support to this enthusiastic new group. Eva Bruce, also a Founder of NANAY, was later appointed as the Regional Executive Director to lead the new Chapter.

NANAY- San Francisco Bay Area Chapter’s community debut was aptly held on Mother’s Day 2000 and was attended by more than 150 guests, including beaming veterans who enjoyed dancing with the youth. A Strategic Planning Meeting of the Regional Officers was then held on August 19 at the San Francisco Public Library where plans for the upcoming year were solidified. The new regional chapter held its first official service activity by hosting a picnic for the elders and youth at the Chevron Rod and Gun Club in San Francisco on September 16, 2000.

On October 15, three enthusiastic members of NANAY SF-Bay Area Youth Advisory Council brought along three other young friends to dance with the seniors at the Roccapulco, located in South San Francisco. On November 17, the officers of NANAY SF-Bay Area are planning to host a Thanksgiving lunch reception for both elders and youth. The Grandparent Matching Program,  "Adopt a Ward", and intergenerational Christmas Caroling at senior facilities are among the exciting programs that will soon be launched in San Francisco.
