NANAY's Honorary Chair Joins Florida Board of Governors

Miami – Dec 23, 2000

Governor Jeb Bush today announced his appointments to the Board of Governors, a new board created by the passage of constitutional amendment 11. Zachariah P. Zachariah, M.D., NANAY’s Honorary Chair, is one of them.

He is also Chairman of the Florida Board of Medicine, Director of Cardiology at Holy Cross Hospital, and President-appointed Commissioner for White House Initiative on the Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.  Dr. Zachariah is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Nova Southeastern University, Honorary Trustee of Holy Cross Hospital, Vice-Chairman of the Florida Council on Economic Education, and Clinical (Voluntary) Professor of Medicine at the University of Miami School of Medicine..

"My goal has been to educate the community on becoming healthy and heart-smart," states Dr. Zachariah. For ten years, he has funded the American Heart Association - Broward County Chapter in providing education kits to ensure heart-healthy education to all children between pre-kindergarten and upper elementary levels. He is also responsible for implementing a heart-health, low cholesterol, and low-fat diet at Pine Crest High School.

"Governor Bush made an excellent choice in appointing Dr. Zachariah to the Board of Governors. We are proud that he is part of NANAY," says John Stokesberry, Chairman of NANAY's Governing Board and former Executive Director of the Alliance for Aging for Miami-Dade and Monroe counties.

NANAY (National Alliance to Nurture the Aged and the Youth) is a Miami-based non-profit charitable organization that provides supportive services to elders and youth and disseminates useful information to the community. It has already served more than 380 seniors and more than 150 youth since the NANAY Center opened in North Miami in 2000. Its services include free counseling, educational seminars, computer classes,  workshops, health and exercise sessions, caregiver support, transport services, recreational activities and intergenerational programs to improve the relationship and encourage interaction between youth and the older persons.

An Urgent Care Center is being planned next year to provide affordable medical, dental and home health services for disadvantaged seniors.

The Florida Board of Governors consists of 17 members, 14 of whom are appointed by the Governor. The Governor selected these individuals because of their commitment to educational excellence, as well as their exceptional qualifications and experience.

In addition to the 14 members appointed by the Governor, the Board of Governors automatically includes the Commissioner of Education, the Chair of the Advisory Council of Faculty Senates and the President of the Florida Student Association.

Appointments to the Florida Board of Governors are effective January 7, 2003.
