NANAY President  Receives Women of Impact Award

Miami, Florida – March, 2009

 Dr. Joy Bruce, Founding President and Chair of NANAY, Inc., received the “Women of Impact XXI” award during a formal reception held at the University of Miami Bank United Center on March 12, 2009. This award is named “Julia” in honor of Hulia S. Tuttle, the founder of the City of North Miami. The event was hosted by Women’s History Coalition of Miami-Dade County, in celebration of the Women’s History Month.

 

 Dr. Joy Bruce is shown receiving the Women of Impact Award from Ms. Betsy Kaplan, President of Women’s History Coalition.

 Dr. Joy Bruce is a Neuropathologist and Pediatric Pathologist who has been working with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine since 1982. Over these years, Dr. Bruce has published books and peer-reviewed journal articles in her area of expertise. In 1994, she founded  NANAY, Inc., an acronym that stands for National Alliance to Nurture the Aged and the Youth, to provide supportive services to elders. In 2000, she opened the NANAY Community Center in North Miami that now provides social services to elders and youth, health care promotion, and housing services for low-income families. She was recently appointed by Governor Crist as a member of the 2010 Census Complete Count Committee.

 The other recipients of the award are:

·         Irela Bague, owner of the Bague group, a consulting firm, who also serves as the State’s Public Affairs Coordinator for Audubon of Florida and Public Affairs Specialist for the South Florida Water Management District. She has served as Chair of the Miami River Commission, Chair of the Girl Scout Council of Tropical Florida,  Vice Chair of South Florida Water Management District Governing Board. She is also serving as Chair-elect for the Coral Gables Community Foundation.

·         Julia Dawson, Esq., is Chairperson of the Miami-Dade Independent Review Panel and currently serves on the boards of Miami Workers Center and Serve the People.  She has also served as president of the National Organization for Women (NOW)-South Brevard Chapter, established the South Brevard Women’s Center, and served on the Board of Directors of the Dade County Chapter of the Florida Association for Women Lawyers.  

·         Sharon Kendrick-Johnson specializes in working with clients whose lives involve disparities of crime-associated with substance abuse, mental health, HIV/AIDS and poverty. She works as a volunteer for the Junior League of Miami, the Miami-Dade Commission for Women, the South Miami Commission for Women, Homeless Assistance  Center, YMCA and Agape Family Ministries.

·         Penny Lambeth, a public relations consultant and partner in Lambeth & Nagle Communications, is a tireless advocate for historic preservation and environmental issues. One of her accomplishments is the restoration, upgrade and transformation of the Miami City Cemetery into a beautiful botanical garden. She is founding member of TREEmendous Miami, and has served on the Board of Directors of Art in Public Places Trust, Dade Heritage Trust, Miami Lakes Beautification Board, among others.

·         The Honorable Cindy Lerner, recently elected Mayor of the Village of Pinecrest, Florida, has been committed to children and women;s issues for years and has served on numerous boards and task forces. She has a proven track record and is focused on integrity in government and civic engagement. She is currently President of Grassroots Connections, LLC, where she has provident in Governmental and Community Relations to not for profit organizations such as the Tallahassee based Children’s Campaign.

The Women’s History Coaliton was founded in 1983 and incorporated in 1986 by a group of women in Miami-Dade County. The Coalition has a multi-ethnic Board of Directors elected by its membership annually and all programs are accomplished by volunteers who have a common interest in preserving the history and contributions of women in South Florida.

 The event was supported by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Mayor, the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners, the University of Miami, and Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
