NANAY Gets Bayaning Pilipino Award
Redwood City, CA – April

NANAY, Inc., a community based organization that provides
supportive servi ces to elders, was honored as one of the five ABS-CBN Gawad Geny Lopez Jr. Bayaning Pilipino Awardees for 2009, during a formal ceremony
held at ABS CBN Internatiional in Redwood City, California on April 18, 2009.
“This honor belongs to the volunteers, staff, officers and board members of
NANAY Inc, NANAY Health Center, NANAY Housing Resource Center, NANAY San
Francisco and NANAY Michigan, who have contributed their time and resources to
serve our seniors,” said Dr. Joy Bruce, NANAY President and Chair, who received
the award on behalf of the organization. She also thanked the volunteers ACE
International Philippines, another affiliate of NANAY, Inc, for taking care of
the Philippine Children in Prison.
“They are the true unsung heroes,” Dr. Bruce added, “for creating a legacy of
hope and service, and for sharing the vision and mission of NANAY.”
The Filipino American Basketball Association of Metropolitan DC, Inc. and PBA
Legends USA Foundation were honored for their
community outreach and services to youth through sports, while Council of United
Filipino Organizations of Tidewater and the Philippine Nurses Association of
Metropolitan, D.C. were honored for their community
involvement in cultural affairs and health promotional activities.

Musical performances were provided by the Philippine Chamber Singers-LA, Anna
Maria Perez de Tagle and Joanna Ampil. Opening remarks were given by Mr. Raffy
Lopez, ABS-CBN Global Chief Operating Officer, while Ms. Charo Santos-Concio,
President of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Network, gave the closing remarks.
The Bayaning Pilipino Awards of America is a project of ABS CBN Broadcasting
Corporation in consortium with UGAT Foundation, Inc., an apostolate of
volunteers working for the welfare of the poor. The Bayaning Pilipino Award was
first organized in 1995 to honor Filipinos residing in the United States – or
American citizens with Filipino ancestry – who continue to remember their roots
through selfless public service for their less-fortunate Filipino brothers and
sisters.
This year’s award was focused on corporations, institutions and
organizations that have contributed significant ly to the well-being of the
Filipino-American community in the United States or in the Philippines. The
awarding ceremony, attended by more than 180 invited guests, will be televised
globally through ABS-CBN’s TFC (The Filipino Channel) on April 26, 2009.
NANAY (National Alliance to Nurture the Aged and the Youth) is a
community-based organization that was established in 1994 to provide supportive
services to elders. It has a community center in North Miami, Florida that
offers geriatric counseling, transport, “soft” exercises, educational workshops,
socialization, arts and crafts, health support, early intervention, home visits,
caregiver support, intergenerational programs, computer classes for seniors,
financial literacy, mentoring and after-school computer access for youth.
Through its nonprofit affiliate, NANAY Health Center, volunteers provide health
counseling, free monthly medical consultations, immunizations, health forums,
workshops and regular health screening. Its other nonprofit affiliate, NANAY
Housing Resource Center, provides homebuyer education, housing counseling, case
management, government subsidy assistance to first time homebuyers, and
foreclosure intervention programs.
The Advocates for Children and Elders
International Philippines (ACE IPI) is a Philippine-based affiliate organization
of NANAY, Inc., formed in 2006 to help protect the human rights and
improve the lives of Children-In-Conflict-with-the-Law (CICL) as well as to
provide social and economic empowerment for disadvantaged children and elders in
the Philippines through an integrated and wholistic program of advocacy,
values-directed family and community education, competency development and
interventional supportive services.
