POE hosted the 2007 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Spirit of Excellence and Scholarships Gala held at Renaissance at the Gables on February 24, 2007, in partnership with Jeffrey Lamar Johnson Jr. Foundation, Opa-Locka Rotary Club, Joint Alumni Coalition of Miami-Dade County Inc., HBCUentrepreneurs.com, Billy Raven Foundation, Africana Research & Education Foundation Aviation, and Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade & Festivities Committee, Inc. NANAY Inc (National Alliance to Nurture the Aged and the Youth), a community-based 501(c)(3) organization established in 1994, has a community center in North Miami that provides free counseling, computer classes, recreational activities, transport, health sessions, soft exercises for elders, caregiver support and intergenerational programs. In June 2004, NANAY established the NANAY Community Development Corporation (NANAY-CDC) to develop affordable housing and homeownership counseling for low-moderate income families. Financial literacy programs and asset-building strategies were provided for low- and moderate-income families in North Miami in 2005. In 2006, NANAY-CDC opened its NANAY Housing Resource Center (NHRC) as a one-stop center where people with housing needs can get information about available resources and access a support network that helps them qualify for home ownership, learn about government down payment assistance programs, learn ways to reduce their debts, sustain their housing after they buy or rent, and improve their living situation. In November 2006, NHRC hosted the "I Need Help in Housing" Fair that was attended by 200 participants. NANAY also partnered with Neighborhood Housing Services and Little Haiti Housing Association to form the Housing Partnership of North Miami, which was recently approved by North Miami Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) to provide homebuyer training, credit pre-qualification and purchase assistance services to prospective buyers of its affordable housing project. "We hope to soon be able to make people's dream of homeownership come true, " says Eva Bruce, newly appointed Executive Director of the NANAY Housing Resource Center. NANAY was also recently designated as one of the 20 Magic Johnson Empowerment Centers across the U.S., to provide state-of -the-art virtual technology for all youth and adult program participants. The initiative will offer financial and homeownership counseling, adult education, basic skills training, English as a second language education, entrepreneurial programs, literacy training, web-based interactive learning and leadership development for both elders and youth. # # #
