-- Where young and old in the Philippines and abroad support and recognize each other as important members of society HISTORYA Filipino word for "mother", N A N A Y is also an acronym that stands for National Alliance to Nurture the Aged and the Youth. It was founded in November 1994, with corporate office in Miami, Florida. It has regional chapters in California (San Francisco-Bay Area), Michigan and Arkansas. N A N A Y PHILIPPINES was born out of necessity -- out of an urgent need to save the Philippine children imprisoned under subhuman conditions, with adult criminals. On August 9. 2005, CNN-ITN aired a documentary report on how minor offenders as young as 9 years of age in the Philippines are detained with hardened criminals and become victims of pedophiles in congested jails. This nationwide coverage created widespread concern and public outrage among Filipino and non-Filipino individuals and organizations, including NANAY Inc., whose executive and board members were mostly Filipino-Americans. NANAY immediately took action by conducting an investigative research on prison issues of children in the Philippines and collaborating with numerous key leaders and organizations worldwide, under the initiative of Joy Bruce, NANAY Founding President & CEO, and Elsa Bayani, Executive Director of NANAY-Arkansas. A petition to
"Save Philippine
Children in Prison" was posted online on August 23, 2005,
and a consensus was made for
NANAY, as lead/fiscal agency, to coordinate a
worldwide effort among Filipinos and non-Filipinos alike,
to address the issue of children in prison. And with N A N A Y Philippines' birth comes a commitment to serve... Our work has just begun....
