OCTOBER 2006
SCHEDULE
“FREE” WORKSHOPS FOR CAREGIVERS
Workshops are free
and registration is not required. Workshops are conducted at the Social Hall of
NANAY Community Center, from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, unless
otherwise noted. Call us at (305) 981-3232 if you have any questions.
October 3, Tuesday
- Memory Loss: Understanding Dementia/Alzheimer’s Disease (AD)
Find out the problems associated with memory
loss, age-related dementia, and AD. Learn about the possible interventions to
reduce the risk of memory loss and how to cope with “forgetfulness.”
October 5, Thursday
- Save Your Life: Preventing and Controlling Diabetes
Special guest speaker is Dr. Christopher J.
Chen, Internal Medicine and Cardiology at Chen Medical Center. Learn about the
signs and symptoms of diabetes, and the impact of nutrition in preventing and
controlling diabetes. Dr. Chen will provide life-saving “tips” and “goodie
bags” for hurricane and disaster preparedness.
October 10, Tuesday
- Legal Issues in the Care of Older Adults
This workshop is intended to explore “labels”
that are commonly used but have specific legal meaning in caring for older
adults. What do these words mean for the caregivers and those that are
receiving care?
October 12,
(Thursday) - Stress Management: The Art of Multi-Tasking
Most caregivers find themselves caring for
their young/ teenage children, as well as their aging parents. As such,
caregivers need to be multi-taskers to meet everyone’s needs and not neglect
their own. Learn the how to build the practical skills of multi-tasking and
caring for oneself in the process.
October 17, Tuesday
- How to Develop Resources and Relationships across Cultures
More and more, health providers come from
linguistic/cultural backgrounds that are different from our own. This workshop
is designed to increase caregivers’ ”cultural competency” that promotes good
relationships with a culturally diverse group of physicians, nurses, home health
aides, and other individuals.
October 10,
Thursday - Disappointments: Ways of Surviving Them
Learn how to avoid disappointment. And, when
disappointing experiences cannot be avoided, how to rise above adversity and
survive them.
October 24, Tuesday
- Caregivers as “Facilitators” of Learning
Caregivers must learn and know about the
situations and health issues affecting the persons being cared for. Thus,
caregivers are often asked about such information by family members, friends,
health providers and significant others. Find out how to facilitate learning to
help others understand the challenges of caregiving.
October 27, Friday
- Stress Reduction through Time Management
“So much to do but so little time” is a saying
that we often hear. For caregivers, time is a precious commodity. This
workshop is intended to help caregivers manage their time effectively in ways
that reduce stress and procrastination.
October 31,
Tuesday- “Living Will” and “Last
Will and Testament”
This workshop is intended to explore the
difference between the “living will” (advance medical directives) and the “last
will and testament” and to discuss the importance of each.
REGISTRATION: Although workshops are free
and registration is not required, pre-registration is
encouraged to ensure that there are enough materials or handouts for everyone.
Please call NANAY
Community Center at 305-981-3232 to let us know that you are planning to
attend. |
