MAY 2006 SCHEDULE of

“Free Workshops” for Caregivers

 

Workshops are free and registration is not required.  However, we encourage pre-registration to ensure that there are enough materials or handouts for everyone.  Call NANAY Community Center at 305-981-3232 to let us know that you are planning to attend.  May is “Asian-Pacific American Month”; as such, some of the topics reflect Asian-Pacific themes for fun and/or educational purposes. Workshops are held at NANAY Community Center, 659 NE 125th Street in the City of North Miami, beginning at 4:00 pm – 5:30pm. 

 May 2 (Tuesday)

Who Are At Risk? – Elder Mistreatment, Intervention And Prevention

            Learn about the different types of elder mistreatment and how to intervene or prevent them from happening.

 May 4 (Thursday)

Having Fun With Horoscopes:  Reading Into The “American” And “Chinese” Horoscopes

Many people read horoscopes for fun, but others take their daily horoscopes seriously.  This is an enjoyable workshop comparing the American and Chinese horoscopes and how we can interpret horoscopes to our advantage.

Understanding the Philosophy and Healing Power of “Tai Chi”

Tai Chi is an ancient art of Chinese meditation and exercise that has become very popular in the U.S.  In this workshop, we will discuss the philosophy behind tai chi and the healing power of this art form.

Time Management:  How To Use Time Effectively And Avoid Procrastination

Where has time gone?  Have you ever felt that the day has gone by and you have not accomplished anything?  Learn how to manage your time, avoid procrastination and feel that you have done something useful at the end of an ordinary day.

Hurricane Preparedness:  How To Deal With Another Hurricane Season

Many of our community members have not fully recovered from the last hurricane season.  In this workshop, we will engage in open discussion about last season’s experience and how to deal with the next one that begins on June 1.           

 May 18 (Thursday)

Stress Management:  Developing a Healthy Sense of Humor

It is said that “laughter is the best medicine.”  Learn how to develop a good sense of humor as a way of relieving stress – laughing at ourselves richly yet knowing when laughter might not be appropriate. 

 May 23 (Tuesday)

Understanding Depression And Suicide Among Older Adults

Learn about the causes of depression, how to alleviate depression and prevent suicide among older adults and the elders. 

 May 25 (Thursday)

Health Maintenance in the Summer Months

This workshop discusses the practical ways to avoid dehydration, sunburn and heat exhaustion during the summer months, as well as recommends the nutritional intake that is appropriate for tropical weather.
