JUNE 2006 SCHEDULE

OF “FREE” WORKSHOPS FOR CAREGIVERS

Workshops are free and open to the public.  Registration is not required, however, we encourage everyone to call-in to leg us know you plan to attend to make sure that enough materials are available, as needed.  All workshops are conducted at NANAY Community Center at 659 NE 125th Street, North Miami, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.

May 30 (Tuesday) -Heat Intolerance:  How to Maintain Good Health During the Summer Months

Many people, especially the elders, are sensitive to sunlight and warm temperature.  Learn the practical ways to maintain an active lifestyle and good health during the hot, humid summer months.

 June 1 (Thursday) -How to Access Resources in Our Community:  How NANAY Can Help

Learn how to locate and utilize resources within our community that will best meet your personal needs.

 June 6 (Tuesday) - Hurricane Preparedness:  Getting Ready for the 2006 Hurricane Season

Are last year’s supplies good enough for this year’s preparation for disaster?  Find out how to effectively prepare for another “active” hurricane season.

 June 8 (Thursday) - The “Living Will”:  The Importance of Having One “Now”

Most individuals wait until they are critically ill before considering a “living will.”  Learn the importance of a living will and why it is important to have one “now”, while one is competent in making sound decisions.

 June 13 (Tuesday) - Effective Care Giving:  Action Steps in Managing Care Giving

Taking care of a loved one changes one’s lifestyle and overall outlook in life.  This workshop is designed to help in managing the caregivers’ responsibilities, as well as maintaining their own wellness and social support system.

 June 15 (Thursday) - Caregiver Stress:  Understanding the Sources of Stress Among Caregivers

Learn the different ways that stress exhibits itself in individuals and families that provide ongoing care for their loved ones, and pick up some helpful tips to alleviate stress.

 June 20 (Tuesday) - Lifelong Learning Skills: How to Develop Ways of Absorbing New and Retaining Old Knowledge

Learn how to absorb new information, retain the knowledge that you value, and unlearn those that are no longer meaningful.

 June 22 (Thursday) - Protecting Your Vision:  Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

AMD is the #1 cause of severe vision loss in people over age 60.  In this workshop, the “dry” and “wet” forms of AMD are discussed and what to do to prevent vision loss or blindness.

 June 27 (Tuesday) - Stress Management:  The Impact of Self-Esteem and Social Presence

The impression that we have of ourselves bears upon our self-esteem, social presence, and stress level.  Learn how to manage one’s everyday life in ways that increase self-worth and reduce emotional stress.

 June 29 (Thursday) - Motivation Techniques:  How to Prevent “Burning Out”

Learn some basic self-motivation strategies to prevent “burning out” as a caregiver, as well as to achieve success in meeting personal goals and expectations.
